Definition

Compiles, computes, assembles and compares data in support of reports, studies, surveys and forecasts.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions at this level perform the same duties as Data Compilers 1, but - in addition - incumbents are required to determine which sources of data to use from a variety of known or suggested areas.  Instructions given to incumbents at this level are stated in terms of desired results rather than step-by-step procedures.

Typical Work

Uses computer to compile data; reviews computer print-outs for accuracy and completeness; reviews and may assign codes given to data, for data entry purposes; 

Collects and compiles data for annual budget review and preparation; 

Computes percentages; drafts for supervisor's review narrative interpretation of information to be included in reports; 

Reviews numerical data for accuracy and completeness; reviews reports' narrative for clarity and accuracy; refers questionable data or narrative to supervisor for clarification; 

Tabulates numerical data from information provided and prepares numerical summaries, organizational charts, work flow charts and graphs; 

Compares data from various sources to identify trends, differences, similarities, etc.; 

Keeps logs of various types of information received; 

May lead lower level employees doing the gathering and compilation of data; 

May provide information to other employees, the public, community organizations, or other governmental agencies concerning a project or study; 

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  sources of numerical and narrative information; techniques for compiling numerical and narrative information; office procedures and equipment; arithmetic; basic English; chart and graph preparation; principles of supervision. 

Ability to:  interpret information and present it clearly in narrative or graphic form; analyze information to determine common content and to determine which variable might best apply; select data to meet a specific need or answer a question; analyze data and summarize findings; operate office equipment such as adding machines, typewriters, calculators and personal computers; lead other employees.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.  

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or G.E.D. and three years of business, government, or military clerical experience, of which one year must be at the Office Assistant 3 level or equivalent.

OR 

One year as a Data Compiler 1 or equivalent. 

College or business school training may be substituted, year for year, for all the required clerical experience.
