Definition
Perform journey-level engineering technician work designing, developing, modifying, constructing, installing, calibrating, testing, and repairing instruments, apparatus, and equipment within a scientific, instructional or engineering application.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under general direction, independently perform journey-level engineering technician work under the direction of an investigator, engineer, or scientist such as designing and developing mechanical, agricultural, hydraulic, or pneumatic apparatus; designing complete systems; evaluating and recommending the purchase of instruments, apparatus, and equipment.
Typical Work
Working from requirements and specifications defined by investigators or scientists, design various apparatus such as data-acquisition system interfaces, robotic and numerical control tooling, or other mechanical, electro-mechanical, agricultural, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electronic devices;
Design complete systems; design analog and/or digital interface(s) for pieces of equipment within the system; update as required;
Perform skilled and precision machine tool work and assembly skills to construct instruments, apparatus and equipment; determine materials requirements; build using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines and drill presses, and hand tools such as soldering guns; gas, acetylene, and arc welders etc.;
Evaluate and recommend the purchase, fabrication and/or modification of instruments, apparatus, and equipment;
Install and test fabricated equipment for proper operation; adjust and calibrate to appropriate standards; troubleshoot and repair equipment malfunction(s) to system, board, or component level using diagnostic software as needed; prepare written documentation;
Assist investigators or scientists in the design or setup of experiments and acquisition of data;
Instruct laboratory personnel in the design, fabrication assembly, operation, and/or maintenance of experimental apparatus and instruments;
Order and maintain an inventory of commonly used tools and supplies;
May direct the work of others;
Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
One year of experience as an Engineering Technician 1
OR
Four years of experience as an engineering technician
Equivalent education/experience.
