Class Series Concept

Positions in this category perform professional information technology systems and/or applications support for client applications, databases, computer hardware and software products, network infrastructure equipment, or telecommunications software or hardware.

This category broadly describes positions in one or more information technology disciplines such as: Application Development And Maintenance, Application Testing, Capacity Planning, Business Analysis and/or Process Re-Engineering, Data Base Design And Maintenance, Data Communications, Disaster Recovery/Data Security, Distributed Systems/LAN/WAN/PC, Hardware Management And Support, Network Operations, Production Control, Quality Assurance, IT Project Management, Systems Software, Web Development, or Voice Communications.

Positions which perform information technology-related work to accomplish tasks but are non-technical in nature would not be included in this occupational category.

Definition

In support of information systems and users, performs routine analysis, programming, installation, maintenance and/or systems support. Diagnoses and resolves low-risk problems using pre-determined methods on computer or telecommunication software and/or hardware, or applications running in stand alone, client/server, web-based, and/or networked environments. Priorities are set by others and many non-routine problems are referred to a higher level or to another support group for resolution. Positions work under close supervision and work is oriented toward productivity, skill development, and development of professional judgment.

Typical Work

Diagnoses and resolves hardware problems. Installs system components or peripheral hardware. Provides documentation to customers (technical bulletins regarding changes, test plans, implementation plans). Under supervision, carries out small-scale or incidental cable installation;


Assists in identifying customer problems on the use of applications or applications installed on multiple platforms and suggest remedies. Isolates application or system problems and coordinates resolution. Assists in testing and verifying system changes. Prepares problem reports;

Assists with the analysis of user reports of telecommunication system malfunctions and identifies the responsible vendor for repairs. Assists in the analysis of telecommunications services and equipment needs. Coordinates moves, changes and minor installations. Processes orders and maintains telecommunication inventories;

Assists in unit, system and/or usability testing to evaluate hardware and software products to determine if they meet unit and/or institution standards. Performs introductory training activities;

Codes, tests and implements components of programs based on specifications including business rules provided by others. Programs as part of a team. Assists with upgrading/maintaining smaller components of a project or existing applications;

Carries out routine debugging using pre-determined methods to resolve relatively low risk problems, reports more substantive problems to higher levels for action. Develops elementary data flow diagrams, process models, prototypes, and user instructions;

Assists in maintaining/updating data dictionaries and standard glossaries of terms;

Reviews system logs and messages to identify events and errors. Runs basic tests on hardware/software. Performs simple repairs/fixes using pre-determined methods to resolve relatively low risk problems. Reports more substantive problems to a higher level for action;

Schedules and implements on-going maintenance such as running defragmentation programs, cleaning printers, obtaining the latest virus checkers, etc.;

Assists with the development and updating of information technology-related documentation;

Assists in performing introductory information technology training activities;

Receives and inventories software. Coordinates software license counts. Assists with the disposal of surplus property.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of information technology experience such as analyzing, designing, installing, maintaining or programming computer software applications, hardware, or telecommunications or network infra-structure equipment, or providing customer or technical support in information technology.
