Definition

Assist in loading and unloading trucks and vans; perform pick-up, transfer and delivery of equipment and supplies, building furnishings, construction materials, and refuse.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under direct supervision, assist in the transportation of a variety of items and in the servicing and cleaning of vehicles.

Typical Work

Assists in the pick-up and delivery of a variety of items such as livestock, steel and iron supplies, furniture, custodial goods, laboratory supplies and equipment, and parcel post;

Loads and unloads vehicle; uses dollies, hand trucks, and other equipment incidental to transport of supplies and equipment or hand carries freight to appropriate designation;

Checks material and supplies; packs, crates, prepares and labels materials for shipment and/or delivery; obtains receipts upon delivery and records shortages and/or breakage on proper forms;

Unpacks, assembles and stores material and supplies;

May assist in preparation of orders for transport;

May perform vehicle servicing such as washing, waxing, cleaning of interiors, etc.; may operate gasoline pump serving customers;

May perform some driving under the direct supervision of a qualified driver;

Performs related duties as required.
