Definition

Positions in this level supervise assigned personnel in the landscaping and maintenance program for institution grounds; Positions may plan and manage gardening, greenhouse and grounds maintenance on capitol campus, supervising 15 or more full time Grounds and Nursery Specialists.

Typical Work

Supervises a number of gardeners in carrying out various phases of program; gives technical assistance in gardening, floriculture, tree culture, and surgery and landscaping; 

Formulates crew work schedules to coincide with appropriate dates for ground preparation, planting, transplanting, circulating, cultivating, spraying, cutting and pruning; 

Plans and develops campus landscaping and gardening projects; monitors landscapes installations and other special projects; 

Maintains departmental records; writes reports on grounds maintenance operation; 

Assists in developing policies and procedures.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Desirable Qualifications

Positions typically require three to four years experience in gardening, grounds maintenance, nursery, parks, or related activity; at least one year must have been supervisory experience.
