Definition

As a member of a health care team, provide professional social work services in specialized areas such as Geriatrics, Sexually Transmitted Disease Center, Women's and Children's Program, Emergency Trauma Center, and the Intensive Care Unit focusing on providing direct client/patient care and/or research and/or teaching.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general direction perform two or more of the following:

  1. Provide social work services to clients/patients, their families, and/or others, and/or participate in health sciences research, and/or participate in health sciences teaching activities.
  2. Participate in practicum instruction of social work students; and/or provide work direction to Social Work Assistant(s), Social Work Resident(s), Social Worker I(s), or other assigned staff.
  3. Exercise independent decision-making authority and expertise specific to assigned area of practice.

Typical Work

Provides specialty consultation to other health care staff;

Serves as practicum instructor for graduate or undergraduate social work students in practicum setting;

Participates in formal and informal teaching of health care professionals, health sciences students and the general community;

Coordinates elements of research studies and projects;

Participates in or chair departmental program development activities or committees;

Performs the duties of Social Worker 1;

Performs related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

A Master of Social Work Degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education AND two years of full-time professional social work experience in a health-care setting eligible to begin social work practicum instruction for the School of Social Work.
