Definition

Under the Director of Education is responsible for individual and group counseling of residents of School for the Deaf; OR develops and administers a career development program for residents of School for the Deaf.  Positions are allocated based on Minimum Qualifications listed below.

Typical Work

Provides individual guidance to residents in personal‑social adjustment, academic, and vocational areas; 

Establishes and maintains socially desirable patterns of conduct for residents; assists in establishing dormitory rules which will assure uniform treatment of all residents; 

Consults with parents and school staff in regard to school adjustment and performance of residents and recommends specific courses of action where appropriate; 

Assists in establishing a school‑wide student governing body; participates as a counselor and advisor; 

Conducts group guidance and counseling consistent with school policies and procedures and assists residents in academic, vocational, and personal adjustment problems; 

Develops and conducts individual case study activities in cooperation with academic personnel; maintains records and data files and provides interpretation to residents, staff, and parents; 

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  attitudes and problems of the deaf and factors affecting adjustment; counseling, sociology, psychology, and guidance; principles of group living; principles and practices of institutional administration. 

Ability to: establish and maintain effective working relations with residents, staff, and parents; obtain confidence and cooperation of residents; assist individuals to develop acceptable patterns of conduct; express oneself effectively both orally and in writing.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Washington State (OSPI) Certification in School Counseling.

OR 

Equivalent education/experience.
