Definition

Operates cash register; collects cash and makes change.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under direct close supervision, operates a cash register and accounts for cash receipts.

Typical Work

Operates cash register and adding machine; collects cash, makes change, quotes prices, and issues cash receipts;

Obtains authorization and cashes checks;

Sells sundry counter items such as magazines, candy, razor blades, pencils, ice cream cones, etc.;

Assists customers and answers questions regarding the location of retail items, current prices, and available goods;

May serve food items incidental to cash register duties;

May clean counters, shelves, fixtures, tables, etc.;

May set up cash drawer at beginning of shift and close register at end of shift;

May assist in inventory counting and stocking of replacement items;

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: methods and procedures used in retail store and food counter operations, retail sales, inventory and financial records.

Ability to: handle equipment used in retail store or food counter operations; make arithmetic calculations; understand written and oral instructions.

Desirable Qualifications

High school diploma or GED certificate, OR three months of general work experience.
