Definition

This is the senior, specialist, or lead worker level of the series. Subject to supervision of a licensed psychologist has responsibility for a major institution-wide psychology program, project or system within an institution, or serves as the psychology specialist for an institutional training, reception/admissions, pre-vocational/ vocational, violent geriatric behavior modification program, or to a multidisciplinary team within a Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) facility Program Area Team (PAT).  

Positions in this class are distinguished from lower level psychologists by institution-wide or cross unit responsibility. A major program, project or system is one which affects clients in an institution. Incumbents may provide direct psychological services to clients in addition to coordinating, monitoring and managing the assigned program, project or system.  

Specialist positions may report to other than psychology staff, but clinical supervision by a licensed psychologist must be available.

Typical Work

Plans, organizes and directs psychology program;  

Screens request for diagnostic evaluations and psychotherapy; assigns cases to appropriate psychologists for action;  

Develops internship program; serves as liaison to graduate psychology departments at universities; plans curriculum and teaches psychology interns in testing, group and individual psychotherapy, ward therapy, and research;  

Serves as member of multi-disciplinary teams, review boards, and other committees;  

Performs individual and group therapy; prescribes methods for handling residents; consults with superintendent, medical and treatment/custody staff regarding effectiveness of treatment;  

Designs, executes, analyzes and reports on research projects; serves as consultant on research, research grants, and reference materials; serves as consultant to psychiatric social workers and other staff;  

Plans, directs and revises ward programs; develops individual treatment plans, provides psychological evaluations of patients; collaborates with Clinical Director, treatment team, and physicians in maintaining a therapeutic milieu; trains nursing staff; determines clinical objectives of ward on an annual basis and monitors efficacy of plans developed for specific objectives;  

Testifies in court as an expert witness; provides mental status competency evaluations and forensic consultation; prepares legal documents, testifies at commitment and involuntary treatment hearings;  

Provides comprehensive psychological services including assessments, evaluations, individual program development and therapy to one or more units of developmentally disabled; meets regularly with team and living unit staff for program review and modification; trains staff; monitors program effectiveness;  

Provides consultation, liaison with unit psychology staff, and planning, coordination, monitoring and evaluation of unit psychological services for the clinical director of a major unit in a mental hospital;  

As a regional consulting specialist: Provides consultation to regional staff, such as vocational rehabilitation counselors and juvenile parole counselors, in matters of test administration, diagnostic screening, emergency counseling; provides direct clinical services in assigned area; interprets agency policies on mental health, mental disabilities, and behavioral disorders; performs diagnostic evaluations; monitors contractual psychological services;  

In Labor and Industries Rehabilitation Center: provides consultation to physicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, work evaluators or statewide vocational counseling staff in matters of diagnosis, treatment recommendation, testing procedures, intervention techniques related to mental health and mental disorders. Consults with and coordinates service with attending physicians and claims staff related to industrially injured workers;  

May supervise lower level staff.

Desirable Qualifications

A Doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited school or department of psychology  

AND 

One year of postdoctoral psychology experience.
