Federal Grants Community of Practice Project

OFM has established the Federal Grants Community of Practice, and is currently holding quarterly meetings. The group’s main objectives are to create a community of resources, develop federal grant training curriculum, and identify and address ongoing grant management needs.

The workgroup currently has representatives from a variety of state agencies who receive a significant amount of federal grants and includes accountants, internal auditors, and grant management staff.

What are we working on now?

The federal workgroup continues to work on the development of the federal grants training curriculum.

OFM shared the draft of the Federal Disclosure Form eLearning class with the federal workgroup and the individuals responsible for preparing the federal disclosure forms.  OFM is currently revising the content based on the feedback, and will finalize the eLearning by the spring of 2020.

OFM is currently working on developing a Single Audit Overview eLearning course that will cover the Single Audit Act requirements and the single audit process in the state of Washington.  We anticipate a draft will be available for the federal workgroup’s review by January 2020.

The group has also been collaborating with the State Auditor’s Office to provide federal compliance training to state agencies. We are pleased to report that the first in-person Federal Grant Requirements training class was conducted on September 20, 2019.

In this class, the auditors discuss the federal government’s top compliance requirements to help state agencies:

  • Gain an understanding of the federal government’s objectives and perspectives.
  • Be more knowledgeable about what the auditor is looking for.
  • Develop internal policies in accordance with federal requirements to reduce the number of audit issues, and
  • Have a positive audit experience!

This class is beneficial to both fiscal/financial staff and program staff.

The next class is schedule for April 21, 2020.  If you are interested in attending, please register in LMS.

Finally, the group has been working on bringing an external trainer to the Olympia area to provide more extensive training on various federal topics. Stay tuned for more information in the coming months.

In addition, the workgroup is in the early stage of developing common resources and hope to have the OFM federal resource site updated with federal resources available for all agencies.
