In 2003-04, Washington ranked first in per capita state and local sales tax collections among all states, highlighting Washington's heavy dependence on general and selective sales taxes in its tax structure.
Of the thirteen western states, Washington ranked fifth in per capita state and local taxes in 2003-04. Wyoming, Hawaii, California, and Alaska had higher per capita state and local taxes.
