Total Births and Births to Unmarried Mothers

1960-2007

• Unmarried mothers now account for over 30 percent of all births.
• Between 1960 and 2000, the share of births to unmarried mothers increased from 3 percent to over 28 percent.
• Since 2000, the rate of births to unmarried mothers has continued to increase, and in 2007 stood at 32.9 percent.
