Summary Tables of Population Estimates by Age, Gender and Race/Ethnicity: State of Washington and Its Counties - 2000 and 2006

The Office of Financial Management (OFM) released the 2006 Washington county population estimates by age, gender, and Hispanic and Non Hispanic race on December 13, 2006. The age, gender, and race details are reported in the 2006 Race Estimates. This summary is an effort to illustrate the race distribution and its changes over the six-year period at the county level. The estimate is done with five race categories and one ethnic category.

The racial groups used in this estimate are: White; Black and African American; American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN); Asian/Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (API); and, Two or More race.

The ethnic group is Hispanic Origin population. Notice that by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) racial classification, Hispanic is not a race category. A Hispanic person can be racially White, or Black, or any other race.

The estimate is reported in three different racial distributions:

Total population by race, where each racial group includes persons who are of Hispanic origin;

Non Hispanic population by race, in which persons of Hispanic origin are excluded; and,

Hispanic by race.

Total population = Non Hispanic population + Hispanic population

For many federal and state programs, the definition of minority is used. In the majority of cases, the minority includes Non Hispanic Black, Non Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native, Non Hispanic Asian/ Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, Non Hispanic Two or More, and Hispanics.

Minority population = Total population - Non Hispanic White population
