Intercensal and postcensal estimates of April 1 population by age and sex for the state and counties

Updated annually in the fall.

The procedure used by OFM to develop county level age-gender estimates is a share method. The method relates each county's age-gender distribution in the base census year to the state's age-gender distribution in subsequent years. County age-gender distributions are moved forward each year by applying the county shares in the base census year to age-gender population estimates developed at the state level by a cohort-component survival technique. This is a relatively simple and reasonably accurate procedure for developing a full range of age-sex population estimates for counties.

Note that these specific age-gender estimates may not match other published OFM population estimates developed using different methods.

Note: The April 1 estimates of population by age and sex 1990-present file have been revised as of December 6, 2011.
