PCHEES Definitions

2005-06

Students are defined as all persons enrolled for at least one or a fraction of one credit in academic courses at the end of the second week of instruction during the current term. Certain exceptions are stated in SAAM 70.40.40.

Student's ages are calculated as the date of the second week of instruction of the current term.

Students' classifications are determined by the following earned credit hour categories. The hours enrolled in the current term are not included in the class determination.

 QuarterSemester
Freshman0 - 440 - 29
Sophomore45 - 8930 - 59
Junior90 - 13460 - 89
Senior135 & over90 & over

If the system used at the institution is different from either the quarter or semester system, allocate students in manner that approximates the above categories.

Unclassified 5 students are defined as students who have a bachelor's degree and are taking courses creditable toward a second bachelor's degree, certificate, or enrichment; but are not classified as graduate or professional students.

Graduate students are defined as all students who are enrolled in a program for an advance degree, e.g., master's, doctor's.

Professional students are defined as all students who are enrolled in first professional degree programs that require three or more years of previous college work for entry, e.g., J.D., D.D.S., M.D., D.PH. (UW), D.V.M., D.PHAR (WSU), MED.S. (WSU Pre-Med program).

"Other students" is a category reserved for non-degree, non-matriculated, and special students who are not elsewhere classified.

A Full Time Equivalent (FTE) is calculated from enrolled credit hours and reported to two decimal places.

  1. For course levels 100 thru 400, divide student credit hours by 15.
  2. For course levels 500 thru 600+, divide student credit hours by 10.

An annual average FTE is calculated by:

  1. For quarter system, divide all FTEs for summer, fall, winter, and spring in the same academic year by 3.
  2. For semester system, divide all FTEs for summer, fall, and spring in the same academic year by 2.
  3. For both systems, include the summer term prior to the fall term of the same year in the same academic year.
