Census 2000 Summary File 3 Data

Thematic Data for the State, Counties, Places, Tracts, and Legislative Districts

These data files are extracts of the most widely used items from Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF3) data – social, economic and housing characteristics compiled from a sample of approximately 19 million housing units (about 1 in 6 households) that received the Census 2000 long-form questionnaire.

The Census Bureau Summary File 3 page provides access to the actual SF3 data file as well as to technical documentation.

Data Definitions - Appendix B from Summary File 3 Technical Documentation (77-page pdf file)

Single-topic data files are available for the following topics. Each file contains data at the state, county, and place level. See file descriptions for additional information about the contents of each file.

1. Data for States, Counties, and Cities:

2. Data for Census Tracts by County

3. Data for Legislative Districts:

The sample data from Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF3) are not available for legislative district boundaries from the Census Bureau. To create estimates of household income, education, labor force, and other characteristics by legislative district, OFM needed to allocate sample data to each district. This allocation is made based on the proportion of population (or housing) each census tract contributes to each legislative district area. If, for example, a census tract had 30% of its population living in legislative district A-and 70% of its population in district B-then 30% of the sample tabulations would be allocated to district A and 70% to district B. Those tracts and tract parts in each legislative district are then summed to make the legislative district total.

The Washington State Legislature website provides maps of state legislative districts and provides an interactive Legislative District Finder tool that allows you to find the legislative district corresponding to a street address.

You may also view, download, or obtain legislative district maps from the Washington State Redistricting Commission website. You will need to scroll down to locate the logo for the interactive color maps.

Data Users Please Note ...

Some of the totals found in these profiles based on sample data differ from those published in earlier releases based on complete (100%) data. See "Why the 100-percent counts and sample estimates are different," a Census Bureau technical note explaining differences between short-form (100%) data and long-form (sample) data, for further information.
