Average Times Participating in Cultural and Recreational Activities During the Year

Data for this indicator are from the Washington State Population Survey, a random telephone survey of households in Washington State designed to be representative of all state residents. Approximately half of the survey respondents were asked about their participation in recreation and cultural activities during the previous 12 months. This indicator consists of the average number of visits or times participating in each specific activity.

Recreation and cultural activities were classified as follows:

Performance - A music, drama, or dance performance, not including school performances , but including orchestras, choral groups, rock/pop concerts, musicals, opera, plays, "in the park" performances, and dinner theatre

Sporting Event - An amateur or professional sports event including auto racing, horse racing, gymnastics, wrestling, demolition derbies, and ice skating.

Park/Historic Site - A park or historical site - national, state, or local including monuments.

Zoo/Fair/Amusement Park - A zoo, fair, or amusement park including circuses, Cirque De Soleil; state, county, and local fairs; and water parks.

Museum/Art Gallery - A museum or art gallery including cultural centers such as the Makah Cultural Center and interpretive centers.

Recreational - An activity at a recreational or athletic facility such as a sports field, arena, golf course, or ski area including community and private gyms, health clubs, all types of sports fields, climbing walls, ice skating rinks, tracks, driving ranges, and tennis courts.

Library - The services of a library includes checking out books, using reference materials, using internet access, and attending book readings.

* The 2004 State Population Survey asked respondents whether they participated in the cultural and recreational activities. In 2006, the questions were changed to ask how many times they participated in those activities.
